SUMMER CAR CARE TIPS
Make sure your coolant system is working properly.
The cooling system keeps your engine from overheating, which can be an occurrence more likely to happen in the heat of the Summer season. Check hoses for any leaks or cracks, and ensure your coolant is clean and topped off. If your vehicle may need it, a coolant flush is a good idea to schedule.
Keep your fluids up.
The fluids inside your vehicle are key to keep everything working in proper order. Fluids work hard to keep your engine systems cool in the extreme heat. Your fluids include brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, and the most regularly checked — motor oil. Oil should be changed regularly in order for a smooth-running engine.
Inspect your brakes.
When braking, especially from high speeds, the friction produces a lot of heat. The extra heat from the Summer can create even more wear on your brakes. It is a good idea to get your brakes inspected to ensure that your brakes are ready to handle the Summer roads.
Check your tire pressure regularly.
Whether it is drastic heat or drastic cold, the outside temperature can have an effect on your tire pressure. Heat can cause your tire pressure to increase, and a sudden drop of temperature can do just the opposite to your tires. It’s a good idea to give a good glance over your tires before you head out on your way, and be sure to get a professional inspection regularly to make sure your tires are healthy.

TIPS FOR TAKING CARE OF YOUR TIRES
Your tires, just like other components inside your vehicle, must be taken care of in order to ensure a long and quality life. It’s important to make sure that the tires you have are aired up to match your vehicle’s standards, have good tread, and are up to the task of your next adventure. New tires can get spendy, so we’ve listed a few ways to make sure that your current tires can go the distance:
Check Your Tread Periodically
The simplest way to check your tire tread depth is with just a penny. This classic method is tried and true, and only cost one cent – that you don’t even spend. Simply take your penny, and flip it upside-down with Lincoln facing you. Place it in between the tread of your tires. Typically you’ll always want to see half to none of his head. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires.
Protect Your Tires
The environment truly has an effect on the health of your tires. The critical materials of tires are constantly exposed to different amounts of UV lighting, oxygen, and other environmental elements. The exposure, without proper care and maintenance can possibly crack or rot your tires! It’s recommended you park your car in a garage to avoid this, but unfortunately not many of us have this option. So it is also recommended that you are careful with your tire cleaners – avoid petroleum-based cleaners which can speed up deterioration, and stick to simple soap and water or non-petroleum based products. During extremely cold, place something under your tires to prevent them from constant cold exposure.
Stay Properly Inflated
Keep your tires inflated and with enough air to meet your vehicle’s specifications. The specifications can normally be found within the driver’s door or owner’s manual. If you have an aftermarket size, it’s best to check with a certified mechanic to ensure you’re filling up to the proper pressure. Large drops or rises in temperature can affect your tire pressure, and it’s always a good idea to check your pressure during these times.
Extra Tire Tips:
* Always ensure your spare tire is ready to go, and should be taken care of just like the regular tires on your vehicle. * If you’re keeping tires intact on a vehicle that is not being used, be sure to use it every couple of months. Due to the heat that tires create while driving, the antioxidants and other materials within the tire get released and can prevent cracking. * Rotate regularly * Know your tire warranty! Most manufacturers provide a warranty, and it can save your wallet in the case of an event where you need new tires. * You can easily find tires right for your vehicle online with our Tire Finder. Whether it’s a spare or full set, we have you covered at Speck Motors. Have more questions about regular tire maintenance? Contact our service experts at Speck Motors of Sunnyside at 509-837-5501!

THE BUICK GRAND NATIONAL SERIES
Before NASCAR became… Well, NASCAR, the highest name in stock car racing was the Grand National. During this time, the Chevrolet Corvette was the one to beat. With the muscle car making a comeback, and Buick trying to make its way out of the reputation of only producing luxurious yet simple and sturdy vehicles, Buick decided to challenge the Corvette.
In 1982 at the Daytona 500, Buick unveiled the first Regal Grand National. After the reveal, 215 Buick units were retrofitted to become a Grand National Package. This included light silver paint with pinstripes, branded lettering, and a turbocharged 3.8 Liter V6 engine. 1984 marked the return of the turbocharged engine Regal Grand National, except now all in black.
With the turbo Regals at their most popular, Buick decided to keep improving. In 1987, a more lightweight Grand National was released, which was named the Turbo-T. The Regal Turbo-T came with the same 3.8L V6 engine, but the body and wheels were created with lighter materials. Only 1,547 units were produced.
1987 also gave us the fastest Buick ever created at the time. The 1987 Buick Regal GNX (Grand National Experimental) was produced in conjunction with ASC and McLaren. The same V6 engine in previous turbo models was used, but the turbo was significantly upgraded to a Garrett AiResearch T-3 turbocharger and a much larger intercooler system. Buick would create the interior, and send the car to McLaren to turn into an official GNX. 547 units were created – making this an extremely rare model, and a dream to many collectors.
The GNX clocked in from 0-60mph in 5.4 seconds, a record for its time.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY CAR OVERHEATS?
Your car overheating can mean a few different things, but oftentimes it can be a leak or blockage in your engine’s cooling system that is preventing heat from properly escaping.
Make sure you have a few things in your car ready just in case; coolant (50/50 antifreeze & water), oil, extra water, heavy duty gloves and tools.
A few signs to tell if your car is overheating includes the temperature gauge getting abnormally close to or in the red, burning or strange smell coming from the front of your vehicle, or even steam (can look similar to smoke) coming from your boiling coolant.
The best thing to do when you notice your car overheating on the road is to pull over and turn off your engine to avoid engine damage and wait for your engine to cool down (at least 15 minutes) before you approach it. When checking under the hood pay attention to the coolant and oil levels, as well as any visible disconnection, cracks or leaks within the system. Top off your coolant and oil, and use distilled water as a temporary, emergency replacement for the coolant. If you believe you cannot drive it safely any longer, call your tow service.
If you’re on the road and notice your temperature gauge begins to go up abnormally, turn on the heater at full blast. Even if it’s a hot day, this can direct the heat away from your engine. Even if this does work, you should only drive a small distance. This can only be a band-aid for your vehicle overheating and it should be taken to a mechanic as soon as possible.
If you experience your car overheating, please give us a call here at Speck Motors so we can get your vehicle back on the road safely!

WHAT TO ASK DURING A TEST DRIVE
Does it have everything I need?
Unless you’re looking for that fun and sporty 2nd vehicle, it’s always a great idea to get something that is practical for your lifestyle. If you have 4 kids and travel all the time, maybe a coupe is not the best idea. In this case, maybe an SUV with integrated navigation? Need a simple commuter car? Maybe a basic car is better for you. When you’re spending thousands of dollars on one purchase, it’s crucial to make sure it fits you and your lifestyle.
Does everything work? And how does it drive?
All of our vehicles in our Speck inventory receive a multi-point inspection before you buy, but it’s always important to listen and feel everything before making your decision. Anything you may find during your drive, our service team is always happy to review with you.
Before you get in the vehicle, do a walkaround. Usually, your sales representative will go through this with you. A walkaround gives you the opportunity to check out the paint quality, lights, tires, and more. If you have a car or booster seat, this is a great time to see if your seat fits into the vehicle. This is also a good time to get in some extra questions that can help you decide which vehicle works best for you.
Does this vehicle:
Have enough room for people and cargo?
Come with a warranty option?
Have All Wheel Drive?
Anything you absolutely require, it’s important to ask about. Once you’re in the car, test all the systems on the inside. Make sure you test all your seat and mirror adjustments to ensure a comfortable and safe drive. Turn on the interior lights, and test the trunk and gas cap buttons if applicable. Regardless of the weather outside, it is important to test out the heater and the air conditioner and make sure all the buttons are doing their job. Switch the radio, and tune through the channels with both the control on the radio itself as well as the steering wheel controls. Plug in your phone, if applicable, to see if you can connect to your vehicle. You can do this through USB input, Auxiliary, and/or Bluetooth. If you’re interested in Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, now is a great time to test your ability to use that feature. If your test drive comes with a back-up camera and/or sensors, give that a test as you pull out on your drive.
Most dealerships have a pre-planned route for test driving vehicles. Sometimes these routes don’t have left turns, hills, speed bumps, or anything that you may run into during your daily drives. See if it is possible to go through these to see how the car runs in these situations. Does it rattle on a speed bump? Does it make a noise when turning? Are the brakes stopping properly, without noise? How does the vehicle react when going up a hill? All of these questions are great to ask yourself while test driving.
At the end of your drive if you’ve decided this is the vehicle for you, make sure a dealer mechanic performs the necessary inspections to confirm there are no leaks, recalls, or faulty systems.
Now that you are informed on what you should look for on your next test drive, why not schedule one? View our inventory at Speck Motors today!
